Last year fruit was left unharvested because there simply were not enough hands available to do the job. Labor shortages were reported across the country. Despite efforts to draw attention to this growing crisis, it appears that tighter security at the border and increased immigration enforcement will make the coming harvest even more difficult. Even those using the H-2A guest worker program could face a greater challenge getting the labor they need. With applications from employers looking for workers through the program reportedly running more than 20 percent above previous years, the process is likely to be slower than usual.

YOU play a vital role in solving this problem. It is critical that every member of the apple industry work to ensure that Congress understands the impact the labor shortage will have on the economic well-being of not only industry, but of their entire Congressional district. You and other industry leaders must take action to support the passage of this critical legislation.

To make this possible, USApple has created this website to provide the information and the tools you need to make a difference. Additional materials will be frequently posted and updated, so bookmark this page and come back often.

For more information about the legislative solutions available and how you can help or for questions involving the media, as well as information on becoming more active in grassroots coalitions in your area, email Diane Kurrle dkurrle@USApple.org.
