From the Desk of the Cafeteria Cook:

September 1, 2001

Hi there!

This cookbook is something I use in the school lunchroom, as well as at home with my family. Parents take note: Kids like finding apples in other parts of the meal besides dessert. Give some of these recipes a try at home and see what you think!

Renowned Author Provides More Than 140 Mouthwatering Recipes Using America’s Favorite Fruit
As famous as apples are for pie, cooking with apples does not stop there.

Olwen Woodier’s latest cookbook, Apple Cookbook, shows this versatile fruit can be used in almost any savory entrée, in addition to dessert dishes.

“Apples are America’s No. 1 fruit because they’re one of the most versatile fruits available,” Woodier said. “The crisp, crunchy, tart, and sweet flesh of apples can be diced, sliced, or grated and added to almost any traditional recipe for a tasty twist.”

U.S. apple industry members are pleased to see apples used in the variety of cooking methods Woodier has provided in her new cookbook. “Everyone, from the weekend warriors who like to dabble with recipes to the diehard gourmets looking for an epicurean epiphany, will find the information in Woodier’s cookbook interesting and innovative,” says Julia Daly, public relations director for the U.S. Apple Association.

Additional praise for Apple Cookbook includes:

“If, in fact, an apple a day keeps the doctor away (and there is considerable evidence to support this view), then Olwen Woodier is my kind of doc.”
— Burt Wolf, James Beard Award-winning TV food journalist

“Any cook or baker who truly loves fresh takes on the classics will adore Olwen Woodier’s Apple Cookbook. Blissfully simple, every recipe begs to be made. This is American cooking at its best – original, unpretentious, truly appealing.”
— Sally Koslow, former editor of McCall’s

Not only does Woodier write about apples and cooking, she also writes about travel and gardening for the New York Times, National Geographic Traveler, and National Wildlife magazine. She is the author of four cookbooks and a gardening book, and she writes for the travel Web site www.away.com.
