Apples Bound For Russia In First Ever "Food For Progress" Fresh Produce Shipment (November 16, 2001)
The first ever shipment of fresh apples included in the USDA's “Food for Progress” foreign food aid program today deported from the Port of Oakland for the Russian Far East. A vessel loaded with 110,000 boxes of apples from Virginia and Washington state is destined for Vladivostock, where the apples will be distributed to orphans and other underprivileged Russians.

Congress Approves $75 Million In Market Loss Assistance For Apple Growers (November 15, 2001)
The U.S. Senate today approved the final 2002 agricultural appropriations bill, which provides apple growers with $75 million in much-needed assistance to compensate for losses suffered during the 2000 crop year. The final bill, which was approved by the U.S. House of Representatives Nov. 13, is now headed to the White House for President George W. Bush’s signature.

Conference Committee Approves $75 Million In Assistance For Apple Growers (November 8, 2001)
The joint House-Senate agricultural appropriations conference committee today agreed to a compromise agriculture-spending bill for fiscal 2002 that provides $75 million in market loss assistance for apple growers, reducing by half the $150 million previously approved by the House of Representatives.

Commerce Department Closes Chinese Apple Juice Concentrate Import Loophole (October 2, 2001)
The U.S. Department of Commerce will apply antidumping duties of up to 52 percent on all forms of non-frozen Chinese apple juice concentrate, including semi-frozen concentrate.

USDA Announces Intent to Purchase An Additional 387,000 Cartons of Fresh Apples (September 19, 2001)
USDA's impending buys will increase total 2001 apple crop purchases to roughly 825,000 cartons purchased for school lunch and domestic feeding programs.

USApple recently elected a new slate of officers at its Board of Trustees meeting held in conjunction with the Apple Crop Outlook and Marketing Conference in Chicago. In addition, association members elected six trustees during USApple’s annual meeting, held Aug. 17.

USApple's Naasz Appointed to Agricultural Trade Advisory Committee (September 18, 2001)
USApple President and Chief Executive Officer Kraig R. Naasz has been appointed to represent the apple industry’s international trade interests on the U.S. Agricultural Technical Advisory Committee for Trade (ATAC), offering detailed trade policy advice to U.S. Agriculture Secretary Ann M. Veneman and U.S. Trade Representative Robert B. Zoellick.

USApple Promotes Daly to Vice President of Public Relations (September 18, 2001)
USApple today announced the promotion of Julia Stewart Daly to the position of vice president of public relations, where she will manage the association’s national apple nutrition research and promotion program.

Senate Agriculture Committee Approves Apple Assistance (July 25, 2001)
The U.S. Senate Agriculture Committee approved legislation to provide the nation’s apple growers with $150 million in direct market loss assistance payments.

Apple Crop Loss Program Sign-Up Slated to Begin Aug. 13 (July 23, 2001)
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) intends to initiate sign-up for the crop and quality loss assistance program for U.S. apple growers on Monday, Aug. 13. The program provides $38 million to help offset a portion of the quality losses sustained by the nation’s apple growers to their 1999 and 2000 crops.

House Approves $150 Million in Market Loss Assistance for Apple Growers (July 11, 2001)
The U.S. House of Representatives approved legislation to provide the nation’s apple growers with $150 million in market loss assistance. Specifically, the $15.7 billion House agriculture appropriations bill for fiscal 2002 (H.R. 2330) allocates $150 million to offset a portion of the losses apple growers sustained in marketing the 2000 apple crop.

U.S. Apple Industry Seeks Higher Antidumping Duties on Chinese Apple Juice Concentrate (June 29, 2001)
The U.S. apple industry requested that the U.S. government increase antidumping duties on imported apple juice concentrate from the People’s Republic of China, charging that Chinese concentrate suppliers are still illegally dumping their product in the U.S. market and harming U.S. producers.

USDA Announces Food Aid Apple Purchase for Underprivileged Russians (June 22, 2001)
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced its intent to purchase over 100,000 bushels of apples as part of the Food for Progress agreement with the Global Jewish Assistance and Relief Network (GJARN). Apples were included as the first ever produce buy.

Tree-Fruit Technical Advisory Council Formed (March 28, 2001)
Technical experts associated with the U.S. deciduous tree fruit industry today announced formation of the “Tree-Fruit Technical Advisory Council,” to address sanitary and phytosanitary issues affecting imports of apples, pears, sweet cherries and other similar tree fruits.

Congress Requests USDA to Withdrawal Korean Fuji Import Proposal (March 27, 2001)
Members of Congress today called on the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to withdrawal a proposed rule that would relax import requirements for Fuji apples from the Republic of Korea, by removing current safeguards designed to prevent the introduction of harmful tree-fruit pests present in that country.

Congress Urges USDA To Buy More Apples and Apple Products (March 21, 2001)
